8 tips for packing in a hurry and a quicker move

Moving can be quite a time-consuming undertaking. However, by following these moving tips, you can save precious hours from the moment you buy packing materials until the last box is emptied.

Anyone who has moved knows that it takes time to drive things from one house to the next - not just the weekend, but days and months of moving tips for efficiency and peace of mind. Here are 8 ways you can streamline your next big haul, from the moment you buy your packing materials until the last box is emptied.

Take care of official business

The last thing you want to worry about when moving to a new town is registering your car and officially change your address. If you don't make a plan to do this ahead of time, you could end up having to take time out of work or scrambling to find a free moment to do it later. Try to take care of these important items of business before your big move. At the very least, you can update your address online in some states. Otherwise, schedule a specific date after moving to fill out the necessary forms and visit the DMV.

Hire movers

One of the biggest ways you can make your move go quicker is to hire professionals. While the cost may be irksome to some, you're likely to get your money's worth in terms of time and energy saved. You'll also likely guarantee the safe handling of your valuables. What's more, not having to haul all of your things yourself means you'll have more energy at the end of the day to start unpacking.

Clean beforehand

Tidying up your new home is easy before moving, when there aren't any boxes or furniture is in the way. Inspect your residence and complete any necessary touch-ups, paint jobs or any minor maintenance while you still have the space to do it. That way, getting settled will be a snap.

Know where things go

While you're cleaning your new home, you might as well save yourself some time and effort by making a map of the floor plan. Once drawn, you can plan where your furnishings will go and, more importantly, what's not going to fit. Do this far enough in advance of moving day, and you can call a company to pick up any furniture or boxes that you won't be able to bring with you. Making a plan is also helpful as you move items into your new home, as you'll be able to direct movers where exactly boxes need to go and save you the hassle of doing it yourself later.

Organize your boxes

Now that you've made a floor plan, you'll also be able to pack your boxes in an efficient manner. Group valuables that are going to the same room and label their boxes so you and the movers have an easy time putting everything in its right place.

Hire a babysitter

If you have children, one of the best things you can do during the packing, moving and unpacking processes is to hire a babysitter. Trying to care for a child while organizing the transportation of all of your possessions is quite an undertaking, even for the most skillful multi-taskers. Set aside a couple of hours every week before the move for someone to watch your child while you pack and again during unpacking. This will also give you a plan to get the job done.

Set a schedule

Even if you don't have children, a schedule is important. It can keep you from procrastinating and help you get a better handle on the tasks ahead. Set realistic goals and follow them.
